Michael Mershon Moore, known to many as Mike or Grandad, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2024. Born on January 23, 1949, Mike lived a life marked by love, creativity, and a deep faith in Christ. Mike was a proud graduate of Walters High School (class of 1967) and continued his education with dedication and passion. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Bachelor of Science degree in Geology/Hydrology from the University of Oklahoma. His academic pursuits reflected his diverse interests and deep intellectual curiosity. Mike also spent a transformative year living in Sweden as a foreign exchange student, an experience that greatly influenced his love of travel, food, and cultures from across the globe.
Mike had a strong work ethic and began his career in videography for News 9 in Oklahoma City. He transitioned into the field of geology where he worked as an independent geologist before serving for almost twenty years as a hydrologist and geologist for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission where he concluded his career. His work was a testament to his expertise and commitment to the field.
On September 3, 1983, Mike married the love of his life, Marcia Elaine Snip Collins. Together, they built a life full of love and shared values. Mike was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud, playful Grandad.
Mike is survived by his wife Marcia, his two children David Moore (Kathryn Moore) and Natalie Torbett (Dewey Torbett), and his five, soon to be six, grandsons: Henry and Charlie Moore; Braxton, Silas, Bradley and baby Branson Torbett due in November. Mike is also survived by his sisters, Linda Thompson (Gary Thompson) and Margret Ann Kinder (Jimmy Kinder), as well as their children and grandchildren and by his maternal aunt Barbara Jane Mershon.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Matthew Moore, his mother, Eugenia Louise Mershon Moore, his paternal grandparents, William Osborn “WO” Moore and Minnie Ann Street Moore, and his maternal grandparents, Lee Frank Mershon and Gladys E. Rice Mershon.
Mike was a man of integrity and a witty sense of humor with many passions. He had a keen interest in weather and found joy in photography, fishing, spending time with his grandsons, taking long walks, collecting rocks and traveling with family. He also enjoyed cooking and woodworking and was known for his homemade contrivances. There was rarely a problem he could not fix or a challenge he could not overcome. His creative problem-solving skills, and sometimes mischievous ways, were passed along to his children and grandchildren, who carry on his legacy. A man of deep faith, Mike was a believer in Christ and made it his mission to teach his children the importance of the love of Christ and love of other people. He was an avid consultant and volunteer for mission work with Disciples for Water. His unwavering faith was a guiding light in his life and continues to shine through his family. Mike is deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones through the example he set, lessons he taught and the love he so freely gave.
